Site Update

The appleseedhq site went under a major overhaul over the last few days: we changed the layout, improved navigation, removed lots of clutter from the main page, and finally added a proper logo!

The logo was designed by Paolo Berto, the founder of /*jupiter jazz*/, the awesome collective of VFX consultants I work for.

Paolo loves designing logos, and a couple days ago he decided it was time this site and more generally the whole appleseed initiative had a proper visual identity. He came forward with several variations on the "apple seeds" theme, and we iterated together until we settled on this very elegant gray and orange five-seed star. The font is the new Ubuntu open source font.

We created several variations of the logo, at different scales, with different color schemes, with and without the text, etc. They are all available for download on the Miscellaneous Downloads page.

Let me also add a quick

Let me also add a quick note:

when designing this I had to find a way to make a logo which did not remind an apple too clearly, as it already used by one company ;) therefore I could not cut an apple in half with a "meridian" cut and visualize the seed. Besides, its probably being done a handful of times.
Therefore I thought about an "equator" cut, just over the seeds. The trick is to cut just slightly over the seeds (cut progressively or you'll have to do an apple pie!).

Anyway, when done you will see this "pentagonal" formation of seeds. Evidencing one and coloring the name would do the rest. All done with open source tools, inkscape and the font previously mentioned, running on kubuntu.

Beers,

Paolo
