Feature Preview: Normal Mapping

appleseed now supports normal mapping.

Here is a quick animation rendered with the upcoming appleseed 1.1.0 alpha-13 to illustrate the effect of normal mapping (together with image-based lighting and camera motion blur) on the Killeroo model:

If you look carefully, you'll notice a few problems with this render such as black spots on the Killeroo at certain camera angles (the "Terminator Problem") and the presence of fireflies (occasional white pixels). Both issues can be solved with a more careful setup of the scene.

In appleseed.studio, normal mapping is enabled per-material, by assigning a normal map texture to the material:
